Abel Tasman NP, Nelson and farewell to the South Island, on to Wellington
Abel Tasman
From Westport I first followed the Buller River and cycled via Murchison to Nelson and to Motueka and Kaiteriteri, which tourists love. On the way to Takaka, to the northern border of Abel Tasman NP (because of the heavy rain a few days earlier some roads were unfortunately impassable) and on to Collingwood it gets noticeably lonelier. As this is also a “dead end” and the whole area seems very remote, you feel somewhat “at the end of the world”...

a toilet at the roadside in Abel Tasman NP

Collingwood and back to Nelson

my rear tyre, a Vittoria Randonneur Pro, had only 2500 km on it when I thought it was slowly time to change it, and I could find a replacement in Nelson.

the weather stayed somewhat gloomy from Nelson to Picton

Picton
and only in the evening, on a hike along the coast, did the sun come out

Wellington
you travel to Picton to take the ferry to Wellington, which I did the next morning, and you get a nice view of the “snout of the sandworm”, as the peninsula near Picton is called

International containers in Wellington’s harbour and a ride on the cable car ...

to the observatory with a great exhibition motto...

and a good view of Wellington to the “front” and “back”

the next day, in pouring rain, spent a day in the Te Papa national museum
