West Coast, glaciers and pancakes
West Coast
From Wanaka, as the booklet Pedallers' Paradise informed me, there is no cash machine for the next 400 km along the main road (the only road) north to the West Coast. It was indeed sometimes a bit lonely there, but the proximity to the coast, the two glaciers and other sights, but also the nice encounters in the evening provided entertainment. First on to Haast; unfortunately the weather clouded over a little...

Franz Josef Glacier
along the coast the next day many kilometres through cold rainforest and quite a lot of up and down; a fish farm had a café attached :) and in the evening I hiked to the Franz Josef...

Greymouth
On the way I saw a big sandfly... and we spent the last day of the year at the beach in the evening in the best weather, while at the same time a few kilometres to the north, separated by a range of hills, Abel Tasman NP, sunny Nelson and ever windy/wet Wellington were drowning in rain.

Punakaiki
The day after to the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki and on to Westport. On the way a spoke broke in my rear wheel, and after I had asked a woman road cyclist on the way about bike shops in Westport and we both did not rate the chances (New Year/Sunday) of a bike shop being open today very highly, we agreed on a meeting point at her place in Westport for later, and I could borrow a nut and chain whip from her, and the spare spoke was put in within a few minutes.
