2009 5450 km

From Munich by train to Denmark, by ferry to Norway, to the Preikestolen and over a few fjells and fjords to the Sognefjord

Deutsch | English

The journey begins on 7 July at 7 pm with the night train to Kolding. The next day, after changing trains twice, I am in Aalborg and ride the few kilometres to Hirtshals to buy a ferry ticket for the next day (unfortunately there is no evening ferry on 8 July, on other weekdays there is).

On the ferry there are several busloads of Manowar fans who are apparently making a stop in Norway; I still have to find out when the concert is and whether it happens to rock next to my campsite :) .

After a restful time in a river valley heading north, the road to Lysebotn turns off to the west and not only climbs up to 1050 m but loses and regains these metres several times. The last descent to Lysebotn has a special tunnel: since the altitude on the steep slope apparently could not be managed with hairpin bends, a tunnel loop a few hundred metres long was simply drilled into the mountain. Here to see, it is not a map error :) .

On Saturdays the ferry from Lysebotn only leaves at 12 noon, and it was a tourist ferry that takes its time for 3 hours and keeps approaching a few sights to the south and north. You can see, among other things, base jumpers with their parachutes, seals and the Preikestolen from below.

After a short ride to the campsite near the Preikestolen I hike up in the evening, because my left toe tells me that the weather seems to get somewhat worse tomorrow. Impressive, I did not regret the journey there.

Towards Sauda in drizzle and mostly poor visibility it is constantly up and down. The short ferries in Norway (about 15 to 45 minutes) cost between 20 and 35 NOK for cyclists.

The road to Roldal is somewhat tough, and the rain was not exactly encouraging either. After that you have the choice between a tunnel kilometres long to Odda or a small road with a few more metres of climbing. As it was raining I took the tunnel.
The waterfalls in Kinsarvik are well worth seeing; in nicer weather I would have added a few detours on the way.

From Kinsarvik to Vik, following road 13 via Voss, Myrkdalen and Vikafjell. Still a good deal of snow up there at around 1000 m. A refreshing swim in the Sognefjord. In the afternoon it was really warm, and an olive margarine I had bought the day before broke down into oil and fat. I put the tub in the porch of the tent, and at night a hedgehog got at it and polished off about 350 g of fat completely. Hibernation can come :)
